TUESDAY TOPICS FEBRUARY: Major General Andrew W. O'Donnell Jr.

TOPIC: Timeless lessons of the Marine Corps Values: Honor, Courage and Commitment and how they fit into today's society.

Major General Andrew W. O'Donnell Jr. was commissioned via the Platoon Leaders Class from East Carolina University in May 1980 and retired in October 2015

He started his career as an Infantry Officer with Battalion Landing Team 2/3 and served as a Platoon Commander and Company Executive Officer.

Going to flight school, he was designated a Naval Aviator in 1985 and has served in several Marine Helicopter Squadrons in a variety of billets in operations and maintenance.

Major General O'Donnell commanded HMM-265, Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force East Timor along with the Presidential Helicopter Squadron HMX-1.

He's also served as the Deputy Chief of Staff and Military Advisor at the United States Mission to the United Nations in NYC.

As a general officer, he's served as the Director of Capabilities Development Directorate, MCCDC, the Assistant Wing Commander, 3d Marine Aircraft Wing, the Commanding General 3d MAW (Forward) in Afghanistan and the Commanding General of the Marine Corps largest aircraft Wing, 3d MAW in San Diego, Ca. He also served as the Deputy Commander at US Forces Japan and Deputy CG MCCDC, Quantico Va.

He’s attended the WTI Course, the Marine Corps Command and Staff College and was a military Fellow at the RAND Corporation Santa Monica, Ca.

Major General O’Donnell was presented the Alfred A. Cunningham Award as the Marine Corps’ Aviator of the Year in 2000 and has accumulated over 5,600 flight hours in Marine aircraft.
