TUESDAY TOPICS OCTOBER: Garry McFadden, Homicide Detective & Star of Discovery's "I Am Homicide"
A thirty-seven-year veteran of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department (“CMPD”), Garry McFadden is one of the most decorated law enforcement officers in the history of CMPD. Mr. McFadden spent thirty years as a detective and twenty years in the homicide unit. After a stellar career, McFadden retired on July 31, 2011 and was immediately re-hired by the City of Charlotte and assigned to work in the Office of the Chief and is currently assigned to the Community Relations Unit to help implement programs within the community.
Garry is a proud graduate of Johnson C. Smith University and has been certified by a myriad of schools and universities in the areas of investigations and forensics. A powerful community advocate, he works with education, religious, government and corporate organizations to provide society with Public Safety and Life skills information that has changed – and saved – lives by the masses.
Garry has received many accolades and awards, including: Medal of Valor, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department; Law Enforcement Commendation Medal, The National Society of The Sons of The American Revolution; 2011 Detective of the Year, Optimist International /Queen City Optimist Club; Community Relations Award and Recognition-Charlotte Observer Newspaper; Ashanti Unsung Hero Award-NAACP; 2011 Chief of Police Outstanding Service Award -Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department; Distinguished Service Award for Homicide Investigation-Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1996 and 2011- 2015 Charlotte Citizen of The Year- Mayor’s Office City of Charlotte; 2015 “Always Believe” Community Service Award- NBA Legends Muggsy Bogues & Larry Johnson; 2017 MLK “Growing The Dream” Community Service Award- Grass Roots Community Initiatives; 2015 Community Service Award- National Hook-Up of Black Woman; 2011 Community Service Award- Mother of Murdered Offspring ( MoM-O)
Garry has been featured on; American Most Wanted, The First 48 and The Justice Files. On June 14, 2016, Investigative Discovery channel presented “I Am Homicide” a docuseries highlighting a few of Garry’s most complex homicide cases that we worked over the span of his career. The début of this nationally televised show allowed Garry to be the first African American Law Enforcement Officer to have his own television show. Currently he is filming season two which will air in the spring 2017.
