Bernie Mann is the president and publisher of Our State Magazine, North Carolina’s premier travel, history, and culture publication. Our State has been nationally recognized as the winner of three FOLIO awards, the magazine industry’s largest competition: two Gold Eddie’s for the “Best Full Issue: Regional Magazine,” and one Eddie for Our State’s podcast, Away Message. And, in 2017, Our State won the City and Regional Magazine Association award for “Multiplatform Storytelling” for the writing, behind-the-scenes photography, and videography for “A Long Way to the Sea.”
Mann has received numerous accolades over the years. In December of 2012, Governor Beverly Perdue bestowed Mann with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, one of the highest honors a governor can award. In addition, former Governor Easley awarded him with the 2006 “Winner’s Circle” award for his contribution to North Carolina’s Travel and Tourism Industry, the 2005 North Carolina Presenters Consortium Award for service to the arts industry, and the 2003 Charles Kuralt Media Award for the promotion of North Carolina.
An active member of the community, Mann is a past Chairman of the Board for the Greensboro Convention & Visitors Bureau. He is a past president of the Greensboro Symphony and has served on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Arts Council and the Eastern Music Festival. A Greensboro Rotary member since 1990, he served as president from 2006-2007.
Prior to his career in publishing, Mann owned and operated 12 radio stations in North Carolina, Virginia, and Arkansas for 25 years.
He received his B.A. at Adelphi University in Garden City, New York, and attended Harvard Business School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 2015, Mann was recognized with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, North Carolina.
He lives in Greensboro, North Carolina, with his wife Bobbie. They have three children and nine grandchildren.
